Winter Nursery Centre, ICAR- Indian Institute of Maize Research, Hyderabad

The off-season nursery, Winter Nursery Centre (WNC) was established at Amberpet, Hyderabad in 1962 to accelerate the maize improvement programme of maize research centres located in northern part of India where temperature goes below freezing point during winter season and maize cannot be grown during the period. Subsequently, the WNC was shifted to Rajendranagar, Hyderabad in 2008. Winter Nursery Centre is located within the campus of Maize Research Unit, Agricultural Research Institute of Prof. Jayashanker Telangana Agricultural University (PJTSAU) at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad (17.3203° N, 78.4018° E) in the state of Telangana.

  • Providing off season nursery facility to north Indian maize AICRP centres
  • AICRP-Constitution of All India Coordinated Research Project Trials
  • Evaluation, acclimatization of maize introductions
  • Evaluation of maize germplasm and genotypes against stem borers, fall armyworm, and PFSR
  • Strengthening the germplasm base of the maize AICRP centres
  • Multi location AICRP trial constitution
  • Organizing maize germplasm field days for AICRP centres
